Want Amazon to give your delivery driver $5 out of the company pocket?

Yes, delivery folks should be paid better, absolutely. We shouldn't have to click a button to say "throw my driver a scrap." But welcome to America.

Great opening:

"President Donald Trump, a man who’s overseen the killings of dozens of people on boats over recent months, was awarded a “peace prize” by FIFA on Friday. It’s was an absurd gesture from the international soccer body to placate our childish president and his disappointment in not winning the Nobel Peace Prize, but at least it briefly gave us some funny memes."

MAGA: Giving foreigners the same benefits as native-born citizens is immoral. This is why we need a government based on the Bible.

LEVITICUS 19:34 : "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God"

MAGA: Not that part of the Bible

This entry was edited (22 hours ago)
in reply to 𝐿𝒶𝓃𝒶 "not yet begun to fight"

Also Lev 23:22 "When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the LORD your God"

"Gleaning" meant people who were allowed to follow the harvesters and pick up whatever leavings they could. It was a form of bronze-age poor relief. The modern version is Social Security.

THE BIBLE SAYS THAT NON CITIZENS CAN CLAIM SOCIAL SECURITY!

❗️Judge orders DOJ to release Epstein case files under new transparency law

in reply to 🔻agitprop & absurdity🔻

A US federal judge has cleared the Justice Department to release grand jury transcripts and judicial files from Jeffrey Epstein’s 2005–2007 Florida case, citing a new bipartisan law that overrides earlier sealing orders.
2/7
in reply to 🔻agitprop & absurdity🔻

The ruling opens the way for public access to records from the Palm Beach investigation into Epstein’s abuse and exploitation of minors.
3/7
in reply to 🔻agitprop & absurdity🔻

The legislation, signed in November, requires the DOJ to disclose all non-classified documents related to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell within 30 days, though officials have not yet specified what will be released.
4/7
in reply to 🔻agitprop & absurdity🔻

Calls for broader transparency have intensified following the recent publication of previously unseen images and video from Epstein’s private island, alongside long-standing allegations in public reporting that both Maxwell and Epstein may have had ties to Israeli intelligence.

in reply to 🔻agitprop & absurdity🔻

The judge’s decision follows renewed efforts to unseal grand jury testimony, previously denied earlier this year.
6/7
in reply to 🔻agitprop & absurdity🔻

With the new mandate in place, federal agencies must now turn over remaining files, marking a significant shift in public access to a case that continues to fuel debate over accountability, institutional oversight, and the lingering questions surrounding Epstein’s network.

Yesterday's post by Heather Cox Richardson should be an urgent call to action.

The new US National Security Strategy gives an indisputable nod to racism, imperialism, and is a direct threat to reproductive rights.

Carney must stop playing footsie with Trump and if you read in the news that Trump "likes" our PM, that should be a dire warning that our sovereignty is in danger.

I'm really looking forward to someone hard-forking it to be an actual FOSS project. As it's been run for a long time, it striks me as one of those things that's treated less as something you get and own, more like slimy commercial software that's nominally FOSS.
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias the ways in which the dude’s been a bdfl really does not give the impression of a good environment for anything but his vision, especially given his past hard stances (like the aforementioned python 2 thing)
in reply to maxine 🇵🇸

I'm fine with projects that are someone's personal thing not really welcoming outside development. The bad vibes it gave me were the sort of a project likely to sell its users out. Like Audacity and shit.
in reply to Cassandrich

@dalias I think projects with sufficient popularity have greater responsibilities, and personal vision has a responsibility to actively chasing popularity and contributions away.

And the specific problem that came up with Audacity did come from a bdfl who could just up and sell the trademark. Not that different from having one person hold full ownership.

Stay cool and spot clean: how to make clothes last by washing them correctly

Laundry cycles wear out fabrics – so try steaming, airing and slower cycles on the washing machine [or washing less!]

Laura de Barra
Wed 7 Aug 2024 02.00 EDT

Excerpt: "Laundry cycles are stressful for clothes due to the agitation, heat and general chaos they must endure each time. A jaunt in the drum can lead to excessive fibre loss; dyes can fade and garments can lose their shape.

Instead of just chucking an item of clothing in the laundry basket at the end of the day, take a look at it. Does it really need to be washed? Allowing a garment to skip unnecessary washing cycles will instantly prolong its life.
Freshen it up

For gently worn, fragile or fast-fashion garments, try these alternatives to a wash.

Air it A good old-fashioned airing can do a garment the world of good. For best results, hang it inside out, outdoors, for a few hours.

Steam is fast becoming the darling of the laundry world. This method is low on risk and high on reward, making it essential for garments you love. Steaming will eliminate odours, freshen up fibres and, of course, remove wrinkles, all without the use of any toxic chemicals. You can choose from a range of appliances to fulfil your steam dreams, from steam washing machines to steam wardrobes. However, the most popular is still the trusty handheld steamer.

Spot cleaning Never underestimate a gentle spot clean instead of a full wash. For grease stains, massage on a dab of washing-up liquid. For protein stains, opt for vinegar. If in doubt, use a shop-bought stain remover [or not! Baking soda, peroxide can also remove stains -- test a spot first]."

omg I'm a piggy troll with clothes. I think that's a great starter article for anyone doing laundry. It is geared to office work type folks, or those rare folk who don't get as messy. Yeah, regular light wear of fine garment in bags sure.... Also a person must be aware how well their washer actually washes, especially those low water washes. Just fyi if anyone has pets or dirty jobs.
in reply to Pomegranate Pirate 🏳️‍🌈🏴‍☠️

@Pomegranatepirate I wash a lot of my clothes by hand, and only use a washing machine and dryer for the big stuff. I used to do a lot of hand-washing growing up, and spot-cleaning. But yeah, a muddy pair of jeans needs a bit more cleaning! (Though I could schlepp down to the river and pound them on the rocks...)
