Personal growth is hard when you leave no room (time) for it.

Quote: "Elon Musk has laid off more than 6,000 people at Twitter since taking over the company, he told the BBC in a rare interview late Tuesday."

As terrible as #Twitter has always been, it sucks that Musk bought it and turned it into his plaything akin to Trump's Truth Social.

When people talk about using #Mastodon versus #Twitter, but you're on the #Fediverse via software other than Mastodon.

I sure hope this finally kills #Twitter.

Elon Musk says X will charge users ‘a small monthly payment’ to use its service

X owner Elon Musk today floated the idea that the social network formerly known as Twitter may no longer be a free site. In a live-streamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, Musk said the company was “moving to a small monthly payment” for the use of the X system. He suggested that such a change would be necessary to deal with the problem of bots on the platform.

“It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” explained Musk. “Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny — call it a tenth of a penny — but even if it has to pay…a few dollars or something, the effective cost of bots is very high,” he said. Plus, every time a bot creator wanted to make another bot, they would need another new payment method.

Musk didn’t say what the new subscription payment would cost, but described it as a “small amount of money.”

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

A small amount for Musk is more money than most people can imagine.

My guess is that bots are more likely than real people to pay to use Twitter.

My guess is that bots are more likely than real people to pay to use Twitter.

He's too far up his own ass to realize that.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Very true @Neil E. Hodges. His attempt to get Journalist to pay fell flat, and he still doesn't realize it.

Anyone who is still using #Twitter / X is supporting Elon Musk, irrespective of intention.

It's kind of funny and sad how #Twitter has been known for bad decisions for a very long time. The Musk stuff is just a continuation of that.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I heard somewhere that Twitter removed the login requirement, but I still can't view any Twitter profiles.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

It looks like I can view individual tweets, but nothing else.

Those of us who grew up with the "free" #Internet are now seeing that freedom being "corrected" with the rampant centralization and monetization.

(The whole venture capital thing is only one part of this.)

#Twitter doesn't work so well as a news aggregator when the news outlets stop posting to it.

Long live #RSS!
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

good, news has no place on such platforms anyway. It only ruins the day and mood with their endless streams of negativity...

Every link on Twitter is broken right now

Links are completely busted on Twitter at the minute across the company's website and mobile apps, as well as TweetDeck. Clicking on one brings up an error message that reads "Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint, please see https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs/twitter-api for more information." As it happens, that link is also broken at the time of writing.
Good. #Twitter

#Twitter never really was about free speech, either before or after Musk bought it.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

exactly, Musk just exasperated the issue and made it more visible.

Just finished uploading all of my #Twitter archive to @竹下憲二 (Twitter) , in case something happens to my tweets.

(They aren't in order, but the timestamps are all correct.)

If you want a distributed #Facebook experience instead of a distributed #Twitter one, give #Diaspora and/or #Friendica a shot. #Fediverse

Huh. My #Twitter archive is missing tweets from 2016 to 2019. What's that all about?

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Right now they just need to make the UI and mascot red.

Honestly, I wouldn't be bothered if this replaced #Twitter for a lot of people. The experience certainly isn't as polished, but social Internet interaction is still social Internet interaction.

Anyone placing bets on whether #Twitter goes down during the World Cup?

Twitter closes offices until Monday as employees quit in droves

Hundreds of Twitter employees are estimated to be leaving the beleaguered social media company following an ultimatum from new owner Elon Musk that staffers sign up for "long hours at high intensity," — or leave.

Elon Musk Tells Twitter Engineers to Look at Resurrecting Vine

Elon Musk, the billionaire who recently took Twitter private with a $44 billion acquisition, has told engineers at the social media company to look at resurrecting Vine, the video app purchased by Twitter in 2012 and shuttered just four years later, according to a report from Axios.

#Twitter is a shitty replacement for feed readers.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Yet another instance of corporate centralization.

Is anyone aware of any #Twitter clients for Android that can only post? As in, that can't read timelines.

One thing I dislike about # is, when someone gets enough of an audience, they become hard to reach.

I know a few people I could reach there pretty easily a few years back, but they're impossible to contact now.
