I recently started dual-booting Linux as part of my slow migration away from Windows 11. The transition has been pretty smooth—except for one thing: audio players. I’m picky, and nothing I have tried really felt right. The closest was Strawberry, but even that was off.
So… motivation unlocked.
I’ve started building my own cross-platform audio player that works the same on both Windows and Linux. Why? Honestly, why not? It’s been fun, and I finally get something that behaves the way I want.
Here’s an early Light-mode look. Still tons to do, but not bad for something I started just a few days ago. Avalonia + SoundFlow are awesome!

"Europe finds itself in an extraordinary perilous position right now. Its main protector has suddenly withdrawn. It has a ravenous, brutal empire attacking its borders, supported by the world’s most powerful nation. Its main export markets are shriveling, and its manufacturing industries are under dire threat from waves of subsidized foreign competition."

European Twitter exploded following yesterday’s rants by US and Russian hardliners calling to “abolish EU”.
Lots of voices like “we need European social media!!”
And I said, “actually, you know what, we kind of have one for years…” 😆
Some people started complaining “but nobody uses Mastodon” and I once again had no choice but to explain that if “nobody uses” then how come I’ve got 3k+ followers here and engaging in truly interesting discussions not less often than there😁
There’s two data points where Fediverse can be indeed seen as less attractive than US cortisol aggregators:
• number of engagements, but granted that up to 60-70% of these on Twitter are generated by bots who cares? Maybe media advertising agencies do, but I don’t.
• presence of public persons - this is where Fediverse actually loses, because it’s a network that grows between them and can’t be “invited”

i have a deepening suspicion that this is less deliberate and more about the west being incapable of manufacturing on that scale anymore. the skilled labor and machinery isn't there even if we wanted to.
all the fancy designs are reliant on supply chains and materials we don't, and aren't realistically llikely to, control.

in reply to Cassandrich • • •OK, I guess "standard of living" has a more technical and specific meaning than I intended. I'm not referring to extravagances or power differentials.
"Will a child born today have less access to health care, emotional and physical security, food, etc"
Yes, that is what I mean by standard of living.
(although I guess, luxuries maybe fall under emotional security? perceived happiness, at any rate).

in reply to Daniel Detlaf, fugitivus • • •"Luxuries" fall under "emotional security" insomuch as they're vectors for "other people have this and I don't and I'm made to feel inferior and pressured to do things otherwise against my self-interest and in their interest in the hopes of geting the same things".
The way you sentence a child to this is by believing it yourself and setting an example for them to believe it. Not by having a child.

I get your point but I think it's overstated. People can enjoy unnecessary things for more than their social dimensions. And can enjoy things that no one else values, but are nonetheless scarce without competition with others.
