A8: My bicycle tour across 500 miles of the ACA Northern Tier route (photos!) back in 2015. #BikeNite
Now that I've figured out my #BikeFit, I should do another tour like that in 2024! (Shame about all of the Summer wildfires here.)
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I wish 50mm would be short enough, but I'm pretty sure I'd need something even shorter.
Ended up going with this little oddity from Crust Bikes, which was made by Nitto. My only worry is that its maximum vertical extension is a little less than my current setup, but maybe the reduced reach will make up for that. #cycling #bicycle #mastobikes #biketooter
Went on a little spin over Snoqualmie Pass, through Yakima Canyon, and back over Chinook Pass on the way to SoSo Cycles in "Tacoma" (really Fife). Riding my #Triumph Bonneville with the aftermarket scrambler bars really hammered home how awkward the bars were, so I wanted to talk to someone familiar with cafe racers and so on. Mark at the shop gave me some great suggestions and sent me on my way. (Album) #motorcycle #photography #photog #photo #photos #mywork
I was worried that Chinook Pass might be closed, and the lack of traffic heading east as I headed west didn't help. Thankfully, it ended up being open and not too busy.
A1: Posting from #Seattle. It's been raining a lot this week and I've had to take my bike to the shop due to a broken spoke, so today's been my only real ride. It's always refreshing to get on the bike after a while!
A2: I have a number of options:
- Neoprene shoe covers to prevent my feet from getting cold, either due to a lot of deep puddles or cold weather. Over the years, I've learned that keeping warm is more important than keeping dry.
- I usually wear a long-sleeve Merino wool jersey or sweater to keep warm if it's cooler out, or if there's a light mist that would soak my base layers.
- Lobster claw gloves work really well when its cold enough for "normal" Winter gloves to not be enough.
- For more rain, I'll wear a Showers Pass water resistant jacket. Since I sweat a lot, I really prefer to have the jersey or sweater mentioned above between it and my base layer, otherwise my base layer will be soaked with sweat. I'll sometimes zip it in such a way to make it more of a cloak than a jacket if it's warmer or less wet.
- Knee warmers help if it gets below freezing.
- In extreme cases, I'll wear a balaclava, but considering road icing (black or otherwise) and snow (it's hilly here!), I'd rather avoid riding in those cases to begin with.
A3: I usually hit coffee shops on my long rides out of necessity, but I've never had a bad experience. Cold weather pushes me to sit-down places, while I'll often stop at espresso stands and sit somewhere nearby to rest while drinking coffee.
I still have fond memories of this stop on a #BikeSTP many years ago. #BikeNite
