Some coffee-related follow-up questions from @BarbChamberlain

Q3. Has #coffeeneuring led you to try a new place you've never been? Would you go back? Do you choose destinations based on availability of bike parking? Do you go solo or enlist friends?

(note: #coffeeneuring includes getting tea, hot chocolate, cider, an affogato..)

A3. I have chosen places based on their cycle-friendliness, yes. Sometimes it's not intended cycle-friendliness, but accidental. Peet's runs two kiosks on UC Davis' campus and when they're not totally busy, it's easy for me to ride up to make my order. It acts as a cyke-thru coffee joint for me. So I sometimes patronize it even though the coffee quality/corp policy is not more pleasing than other places. #BikeNite

@glightly Never thought like that (still too #automobile oriented), but so true. Last year went through a [large corporate burger chain] drive thru on my #cycle becuase they only did drive thru. Totally an option.

I've tried that here, but they always refuse to serve you. Not sure if it's actually against the law in CA, but drive-thru chains act as if it's illegal. #BikeNite

@glightly I can't remember exactly, but I feel like I've had a similar experience where I could not walk up and order at a drive through.

It's pretty ridiculous. I think they actually fear cyclists more than motorists because a cyclist can get closer to the window, but drivers are driving a literally deadly weapon and are also more able to hide firearms until the time is right to bring them out.

I haven’t gone Coffeeneuring

I like to go for burrito bowls. I bring my own bowl. This usually happens on the way to the supermarket because I’m out of food.

#BikeNite A3. I end up at places I'd never known before somewhat frequently as a result of biking everywhere anyway. I'll see restaurants or bakeries or bookstores and if I'm not in a rush, it's nice to stop in. I encourage my friends to ride their bikes everywhere also, and there's now an unspoken understanding that if I'm doing the inviting, it's implicitly going to be a bike-friendly time.

I’ve tried many new places, and tried out many new routes due to coffeeneuring. New shops, new trails, biking in more ”interesting “ weather, new beverage choices.

A3: I usually hit coffee shops on my long rides out of necessity, but I've never had a bad experience. Cold weather pushes me to sit-down places, while I'll often stop at espresso stands and sit somewhere nearby to rest while drinking coffee.

I still have fond memories of this stop on a #BikeSTP many years ago. #BikeNite

A3: It’s a college town, with another college town next door, so there’s no shortage of coffee spots. Many are on or near the bike path. But my fave spot is a sorta secret public right of way down to the river. On the weekend its usually me & my partner. #BikeNite

I’m also big on the ice cream ride. Some years back in NYC I made a gelatoneuring spreadsheet for the summer, with a dozen or so ice cream shops on it. (Gelato went better with the suffix -neuring than anything else I could think of.) Now here in semi-ruralandia the rides are often to farms or seasonal creamies. #BikeNite

@rowmyboat Not long after we moved to Olympia I found the FB group of people who organize rides. Someone led a "Bakery Crawl"--like a pub crawl but with pastries. That was great! Ride, eat, ride, eat, ride, eat.... I like the ice cream ride idea--may have to organize that ride next summer. #BikeTooter #BikeNite #FueledByCalories

A3 #BikeNite Yes, and sometimes. There's one artery (Mass Ave in Cambridge) that I avoid, and thus by default avoid all the shops on it, because the shop-owners are shitheads opposing improved infrastructure which is still not good enough, and on that road you will get blamed for your death when a truck kills you and I take that personally so fuck them and their precious small businesses.

A3. Though I usually don't ride specifically to get coffee, looking for coffee during a ride has definitely introduced me to new places that have become "regular" stops during rides. One example is Kaleidoscope coffee in Point Richmond CA. If I'm headed in that direction, or will be near, then I will stop there.

I do enlist friends to ride fairly often for our #BikeBus and Bike Parades. But we are usually with kids and just ride around the neighborhood and hang out at a park or near schools, so that the kids can play. So there usually isn't coffee or visiting a business.

BUT - I really want to try this - Megan Ramey does a really cool thing in Hood River where an a middle-school aged club gets to pick a destination on their own, then figure out how to get there by foot/bike, with adult supervision. I'd love to try this with the kids we ride with sometime, and cycle-friendliness would be a huge part of the route and destination.

Love Megan's idea! I'll share that with the folks working on our school-based bike program. (I know Megan--not surprised she has great ideas.)
