BMW North America issues "stop sale" notice for all petrol motorcycles

BMW of North America is dedicated to providing vehicles to our customers that meet their expectations. To ensure that our vehicles are of the highest industry standards, BMW performs ongoing testing and evaluation.

Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to material specifications.

As a result, BMW of North America is issuing a temporary, voluntary stop-sale for all new and pre-owned BMW motorcycle models in dealer inventory, except for the CE 04.

This temporary stop sale is not safety related and BMW owners may continue to ride their motorcycles as normal.

My dad complains about how uncomfortable his #Harley bikes are for long days of riding because of the vibration.

Maybe Harleys don't actually make good touring bikes. 🤔 #motorcycle

I love the aesthetic and design of Harley bikes, but between the outrageous prices, vibrations, and heavy clutch lever, I don't know if they're the bikes for me.

I'll definitely get me an Iron 883 someday though. It's always been a dream bike. I've got to at least try it, and I'm sure it won't be hard to sell if I end up not liking it.

in reply to Dave Heinemann 🇦🇺

I still found my Honda CRF300 Rally a bit too vibey in the bars and ordered a Crampbuster at the recommendation of @kev. Finally got it and installed it today, then took the bike for a spin. Seems to make a big difference!

If you haven't seen them, it's a plastic lever that clips onto the throttle tube. It lets me hold the throttle open with the weight of my wrist and almost no grip on the tube itself. Seems a world of difference.

Your dad might find them helpful - there are Harley models.

in reply to Dave Heinemann 🇦🇺

@dHeinemann glad it helped. The simplest solutions are usually the best, in my experience. 🙃
in reply to Dave Heinemann 🇦🇺

I have Throttle Rockers (nearly the same product) on my two big bikes and would never choose to go without one going forward. The looser grip not only saves my hand, but also lets me feel the feedback from the bars in turns for better handling.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

What are all those exhausts doing on an electric motorcycle? Or if not electric, why are you calling i a "torque monster"?

You saying you're faster on your #ebike than I am on my non-boosted #bicycle is like me saying I'm faster on my #motorcycle than you are on your e-bike. It's not a meaningful comparison. #cycling #ebikes

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I really don’t care whether someone is riding a “regular” bicycle or an e-bike. I care that they’re out, getting some exercise, and doing so safely - that they aren’t riding outside their abilities.

Whether they’re faster or slower than me is irrelevant; it’s not a race. Just enjoy, be considerate, and don’t push your boundaries too much.

I kind of want a two-stroke #motorcycle, but one that has autolube so I don't need to do the premix step myself.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Only two stroke I've had is a red Jawa 350 TS. It wasn't supposed to be premix but was as the mixer never worked properly. It went surprisingly well, stopping on the other hand was a different matter.

I feel like most of the statistics that tout the danger of #motorcycle riding come from the demographic of people who typically ride motorcycles: risk-takers. Either young hotshots who "pretend race" on the road, or old guys who have a propensity of riding drunk. If you ride with care, learn good technique, and make good decisions, the risks within your control are much less. The skill ceiling is pretty high and the learning curve is long, but that's what makes it worth it to me. :)

That said, the risks outside of your control (other people on the road, road conditions, etc.) are definitely more hazardous when riding a motorcycle than when you're driving a car. Gotta be on guard and plan accordingly when out there!

also certain light configuration have been shown to increase visibility alot. but almost nobody makes use of it.
in reply to know

Do you have any articles about this? I've been curious about aftermarket light additions, but I want to pursue them in an intelligent manner.

The #Harley image is that of rebels and gearheads, but the Harley reality is old rich guys who like that image. #motorcycle
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

True gearheads would get an actual vintage motorcycle instead of a new Harley.

Got a hand massage from @clover to soothe my sore hands after a long day on the #motorcycle . :)

Ended up at the front of a sportbike group from Skykomish to Monroe. The guy behind me gave me a fist bump while we were all stopped at the first stoplight in Monroe.

Felt pretty validating. #motorcycle

It's nice finally finding people supportive of my #motorcycle hobby. Most of the people close to me don't like that I have the hobby. :(
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I have only a few friends who ride but don't know anyone who actually dislikes it luckily. That would cause some serious friction.

Some photos from Mount Rainier now that I actually have service. #motorcycle

I would drive a side by side as my main car if it were legal to do so. #motorcycle

@Homoevolutis0
I have a similar one in green as a project bike. I should get it out of the corner it’s sitting in and put it in a space where I can finally get around to tinkering with it.

I was walking home yesterday along one of the major arterials (A) yesterday when I heard an ambulance siren also headed along arterial A toward where it has an intersection with arterial B. It waited at the intersection for a moment, then I heard a loud #Harley blasting down arterial B and saw it zip across the intersection at high speed.

This is another reason why I don't want to be associated with Harley culture. #motorcycle

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I live across the street from both a fire station and a hospital and probably hate emergency vehicle sirens more than most people, but I still think that was selfish, reckless, and downright stupid.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I now live a few block away from the hospital and the fire station
In the midle of the night: I ear almost nothing!!
Thanks!

The 1000SX is a great bike, and still on my (extremely long) list of potential bikes to buy in the future. 😁

Compared to the Ninja 650, I like that the 1000SX has matching hard panniers and cruise control. It's a shame that the Ninja 650 missed out on those because I probably don't need the extra power of a 1000 cc bike.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I love the look of fenderless Kawasakis. I have a green Z400 as a commuter (ironically I bought it just before COVID hit, and now I'm 100% remote 😅) and I'm surprised how close that Z125 matches the style

I honestly would rather ride a #motorcycle than a #bicycle on a rural highway at this point. Being a sitting duck is no fun, and I learned that the hard way while cycling on such highways over the years. :(

Riding a #motorcycle is dangerous, but all these drunk Harley riders are blowing the crash and death statistics way out of proportion. >:(
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Hmmm drinking and motorcycling sounds like a short term hobby to me.

One of our neighbors got a #Yamaha MT-09. It makes quite the sound in our parking garage! :) #motorcycle

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

This experience has made me realize that one thing I really like about #motorcycle riding is how it forces me to conquer my fear and anxiety rather than giving into them like how other parts of my life want me to. :)
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

In October I‘m going to participate in a motocross training for beginners which makes me really anxious when I think about it 😅 Usually I want to achieve that I move out of my comfort zone without becoming too nervous 😎 No idea if it also helps in everyday life

Hondas might be "boring" to some, but breakdowns are a kind of surprise I don't need! #motorcycle
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

On several of my longer #motorcycle rides, I've seen groups of Harleys pulled over on the side of the highway/freeway where nobody would voluntarily stop. I can only imagine something bad happened. :(

How do folks feel about the CBR650R? (It has a 648cc inline-4, unlike other 650cc sportbikes.) #Honda #motorcycle 🏍️

My legs are too long for someing as committed as a ZX-6R, and I'm guessing that would also apply to a CBR600RR. :(

Just ordered a new #motorcycle #saddle with @clover's help. Her help is important because she'll be riding as my passenger. :)

Stopped by my local dealer to test ride a #Triumph #StreetTriple today. Not only was the engine super easy to work with, the ergonomics were great for the street! The riding position was somewhat sporty without being too committed. #motorcycle (1, 2, 3)

Who remembers back when Japanese #motorcycle companies were trying to get into the high-output V-twin space that has been dominated by the Italian companies?

What a birthday weekend! I got to test ride a ZX-6R at a Kawasaki vendor day at the Cycle Barn in Marysville, then have a fun ride out to the Leavenworth area. Unfortunately, I got separated from @clover due to a fiery car crash on US 2 and had to spend a night alone in Gold Bar. The next day, I met up with her at the lovely cabin we rented and we had a chill time in the central Cascades, which wrapped up with listening to rain the morning before we returned home. #motorcycle

The dog survived the crash, by the way.

Parked my bike on a dirt slope, but didn't put it in gear when I thought I did so it fell over. Frame sliders kept damage to almost nothing! :/ #motorcycle
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

The only damage I could see was a dirty scuff on the very bottom of the main side fairing.
