Nivex Derailleurs Are Here!

Nivex derailleurs and most associated parts are now in stock! It’s been a long journey, with R&D starting more than four years ago. When you make a derailleur that’s not just a copy of what’s already out there, but fundamentally different, you’re starting almost from zero. (The 1930s Nivex provided a wonderful inspiration, but it was never intended for modern drivetrains.) It’s been exciting and fun, frustrating at times, and ultimately very rewarding, and now we’re excited to share the fruits of our work.

At that price, it would have to be a significant improvement over the offerings from Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo to get any uptake. I just can’t see it.
in reply to Stuart Lamble

Definitely. I'd still like a chance to try it out someday, though.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Now that I've had a chance to actually read the article, they have some interesting ideas. There are aspects of it that they're selling as positives when really it's just choosing one set of compromises over another, but there are some aspects of it that just make sense when you look at them.

But still - it's going to be a very small niche for this product. Most riders are going to stick with Shimano or SRAM, or - in smaller numbers - Campie. If you're looking at spending that sort of money on a rear derailleur, I suspect that you're more likely to end up with Di2 or eTap, or maybe EPS.

I wish them luck, but I wouldn't be investing money in that company, is the short of it. (Which is fine - you don't need to be making world beating returns on capital to be successful, depending on how you want to define "success" for a given company. That's not the world that they're choosing to play in, and more power to them for it.)

If I'm just outside and not being active, I can bundle up enough to keep warm. Same applies for when riding a motorcycle.

But when I'm being active, if I do that, I end up soaking my inner clothing layers with sweat and end up freezing even worse. Even wool inner layers don't prevent that. #cycling #bicycle

I've tried both synthetic and Merino base layers, but my torso just loves to sweat! :(

thin wool baselayer + Gore Windstopper shell works for me for up to 60 minutes running. The wool gets wet but still insulates. The Gore controls evaporative cooling.

Problem with raw material supply. 931 is available instead now.

Kind of wild how the California Superbike #motorcycle track racing course significantly improved my #bicycle handling skills as well. Now I follow this process when starting a turn:
  • Consciously point the wheel the opposite way I’m turning.
  • Lean the bike the appropriate amount.
  • Let the front wheel turn according to the caster effect to stabilize.
Since I learned to ride a bicycle as an adult, nobody taught me that previously. Turning at speed is so much easier now! #cycling

And lately, I've started consciously noticing the feedback from #3, so I can get a better feel for for the bike turns.

Really excited for SDOT to finally open the new protected bike lane that will finish the outer loop around Green Lake for cyclists! (Original)

Oh, and I got a Specialized Phenom for this bike since I know that saddle works for me and has enough setback. #cycling #bicycle #seabikes #Seattle

And get rid of noise... that tool i know is capable to reduce that (DxO PhotoLab 6 Elite) is Windows/Mac platform. There are other but for me that tool works.

Darktable can denoise, but it has its limits. If the denoise filter is applied too strongly, textured stuff looks too smooth.

I very much prefer roads that don't have such kind of "bicycle infrastructure", for various reasons. See for example the roads I used on my bike ride yesterday.

I call this "N+1 Engineering". (Original) #cycling #bicycle

I discovered that the existing Velo Orange decaleur wouldn't work because the head tube on my new Crust Romanceur 4.0 was much longer than the one on my Soma Stanyan, so I decided to just set up a second decaleur using the existing Gilles Berthoud mount.

Finally got to get out and ride my new Crust Romanceur yesterday. The ride is super plush with the 2" tires, but plenty agile with the small 26" rims! This iteration also finally added thru-axles, which are one of my requirements for disc brakes today after dealing with them with QRs for years. Only problem now is that the saddle doesn't have enough setback, but I have a specific replacement saddle in mind. #cycling #bicycle #seabikes (1, 2)

First ride with #Autumn weather of the year! Someone put a pumpkin lantern on the head of the Lenin statue in Fremont. #cycling #bicycle #seabikes (1, 2, 3, 4)

I don't think I've ever had a set of Shimano dual-pivot caliper brakes I've liked. VO's Grand Cru stop okay. I'd rather have a set of cantis or centerpull calipers, though. #cycling #bicycle

I feel like e-bikes are more like a more approachable version of motorscooters for a lot of people, with the benefit of the option to get exercise, as well as often having the ability to get away from car traffic depending on bicycle infrastructure. #cycling #bicycle #motorcycle #scooter

Now that I've had a good saddle position for a while, I've corrected my pedaling technique: no more overextending or trying to bring my heels down. No knee pain whatsoever, and I can spin fast while really working my thigh muscles. #cycling #bicycle

After #cycling today in the #smoke, I finally ordered a reusable respirator mask and a set of P100 filters. I hate wildfire season. #bicycle #seabikes

Pretty much anyone would have trouble breathing while exercising heavily with a PM2.5 AQI of over 160. I still taste smoke hours after getting home.

Cranked down the saturation in the Flickr photos since posting this.

There are some ways that ebikes could substitute for cars, and others that they can’t. It comes down to people being willing to change habits (eg: using the bike with panniers for shopping instead of the car) and accept small inconveniences (smaller loads on the bike than in the car) for larger benefits.

But speaking as a keen cyclist (back of the pack age group hack), I’m all in favour. Ebikes are still bikes. They just make it more accessible to the general public, and that’s a good thing.

In my city (500 000 residents), I sold my car. I travel by electric bike, by bus, by cab.

New stem day! My core wanted the bars a little higher, but the Nitto Pearl I'd had on the bike for a long time was already at maximum extension. Thus, I tracked down a Nitto Technomic Deluxe for a little more rise. (1, 2) #cycling #bicycle

@clover and I went on a day trip to go see the recently opened Beverly Bridge on the Palouse to Cascades Trail. She wasn't too impressed with it, but both its classic design and what it symbolized for #cycling in Washington inspired me. While I've gotten a decent handle on white balance, I'm still working on getting a good overall exposure. Photos in my past albums were far too bright, so I'm working on finding a good level.

  • Cyclocross originally was on bicycles
  • Cyclocross + motor = Motocross
  • Motocross + bicycle = Bicycle motocross (BMX)

The new pedals are significantly thicker than my old ones, so I had to raise my saddle a bit.

Lumping people who want some assistance for getting around by # with those who want to go fast like motorcycles without needing a special license or insurance doesn't really make sense. # #

Shout out to Free Range Cycles for taking care of a flat that the tubeless sealant and tire plug just couldn't plug on my Soma Stanyan!

Saw a shiny Subaru WRX STi parked outside the shop while there, and the owner was a regular customer of said shop. He said he got it because it was both manual and a ton of fun to drive.

If you need Shimano SPD, the Rally is one option; the SRM X-Power is another. If you're after SPD-SL, the Favero Assioma Duo-Shi are a good option, though some assembly is required. Look Keo cleats are also available from Favero, and Wahoo Powrlink (that is not a typo) will do Speedplay. (No, autocarrot, I did not mean "speedily".)

All of those are good options; I'd have no qualms about running any of them.

Honestly, my advice - especially if you're the type who upgrades bikes regularly - would be to go with the pedal-based power meters over crank based. I'm eyeing off a replacement for my 2017 Roubaix, for a number of reasons, and the main options I'm seeing out there are all 12 speed, which is not (at least officially) compatible with my Quarq spider power meter. That's... mildly painful, to say the least. I opted for the Quarq because at the time, there were no SPD-SL pedal power meter options available.

Good luck.

While I was at a local bike shop, Jan Heine dropped by and had a friendly chat with the mechanic about the future of the #. He said that in 10-15 years, most people will have abandoned the "normal" pedal bicycle in favor of one with electric assist. #
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I don't know about that. I think it may have a lot to do with the person's intended use.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Yeah here we are seeing all the overweight types riding e-bikes. They keep bragging about how they are biking everywhere now (ie motoring) while still gaining weight of course. On the plus side it keeps some cars off the road.

Did some # maintenance today. Deep cleaned the chains and gear clusters on two bikes, and rebuilt the jockey wheels on one rear derailleur. The bushings may not be as smooth as ball bearings, but they are sure easy to work on! #
