With the memories of snow and cold in the mountains, I decided to ride up Whidbey Island instead. This also gave me the opportunity to check out the part of Deception Pass State Park that I'd missed during the wedding, as well as Kayak Point Regional Park. (I've been riding nearly every weekend in March, but I've been spending time refining my photo editing skills. These are some of the earliest photos from my practice.)

Finally convinced @clover to go on a #motorcycle ride with me yesterday. She was freezing, but the heated jacket I got for her at least helped some. (More photos to come later.)

Saw someone riding a Meridan #Triumph triple yesterday. It made quite a sound! #motorcycle

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Nice!

Which model is it? I've had my eye on the Ninja 650 lately as a potential second bike. They look pretty comfortable.
in reply to Dave Heinemann 🇦🇺

Thanks. It's a 1000SX. Very comfortable if you're used to a little forward lean.

I kind of like it more when the power band is a bit higher in the rev range. It feels more refined to me. #motorcycle

Good ride yesterday, albeit very cold in the mountains. (More photos to come later.) #motorcycle #photography

My second attempt to visit Mineral went significantly better, though it was super quiet since it's mostly geared towards folks enjoying the adjacent lake. (Mineral II (2023-02-11), Album (35 photos), 12 photos attached) #photography #photog #photos #photo #motorcycle

And on the way back, I was passed by a huge pack of sportbike riders who had zero chill.

Stupefying CO2 in Motorcycle Helmets and the Free Fix

#motorcycle

Since I ride with earplugs, the chin curtain can't be helping me too much, anyway.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Mostly I used to ride only with a 3/4 helmet (and sometimes just a half) and I didn't get my first full-face until recently and it is a flip-up, and I do find it stuffy and will often flip it up at red lights.

I wanted to finally check out the town of Mineral in Lewis County, and the roads seemed fine everywhere, but they ended up getting snowier the further up in elevation I went. By the time I hit the last road to get to the town, it was covered in slush and I went down maybe 100 feet after turning onto said road. (Blog Post, Album (7 photos), 7 photos attached) #photography #photog #photos #photo #motorcycle

A local helped me get the bike up on the slick surface and I headed straight home after. Mineral will have to wait until the weather warms up a bit.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

you know this but ..... that type of tyre/tread is not great for those conditions is it :-(

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

My experience in staying warm was to use polypropylene next to my body and then anything that prevented wind whipping through me. I also have electric chaps I wore under my leathers.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

That is a good thing. If that had not worked you may have needed more people or a crane of some sort.

I hope you get the bike all fixed up!

Had a fall due to slush on the road to Mineral. I'm fine, and a local helped me get my bike up (too slick to do it solo). The roads were fine until the last little bit. I hate Winter. #motorcycle

Finally got the chance to take this out on a proper ride, but only after getting a crash course in how to start a high-strung engine. Just like a bike with a carburetor, you have to take care with the choke and idle setting, through it's all electronic.

The bike was a lot of fun to ride! It was super light like a bicycle, and the smaller engine was really easy to work with after a few minutes.

I'd been on the lookout for a #Honda CRF450RL for a few weeks, and when I saw this used one that came with all kinds of mods and accessories for not much more than a new one despite only having 600 miles, I put a deposit on it. The next week, I rode my Bonneville down to Olympia to see it in person before outright buying it.

A few days later, my dad and I drove down in his SUV so we could bring it back on the car's rear rack, since the weather was going to be nasty for the foreseeable future. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) #motorcycle #photography #photog #photos #photo

The #motorcycle world is going crazy for adventure bikes, but dual-sports interest me more.
in reply to Valheru

agreed, I've no idea why you would want to buy a bike that has been designed for off-road use, therefore compromised for the road, and then use it primarily on the road 🤷🏽‍♂️

I've test ridden a couple of enduro style bikes, really don't know what the fuss is all about.
in reply to ManxCocker

I think it's the same mindset that results in the popularity of rugged SUV and pickup truck designs.

Seems like motorcycles are a lot more popular outside of the US and Canada. #motorcycle
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

I don't know about Canada, but as far as I can tell most places I go people ride a motorcycle because they're cheap, have good gas mileage, and are easy to park (the same reasons I got one). In the U.S. people mostly don't care about any of those things and only ride motorcycles for the "cool" factor or because they're tied to ideas of toxic masculinity and they think it makes them look tough.
in reply to Sam Whited

What I'm getting at is that it's always striking to me how different "motorcycle culture" is here vs. when I'm traveling.
in reply to Sam Whited

Motorcycles are viable transportation in much of the world, but in the US and Canada they are considered "toys".
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Yah! Toys is a good word for it that I was missing; that's exactly how it is here.
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Possibly because of the size, you see a lot of cheaper/more efficient/lower cc bikes here. This is also rapidly expanding with the cost of living.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

My current rides, I have been riding 50+ years, on & off road.

in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Wanted to test a Street Triple while waiting for my own bike's service, but none of them were ready to ride.
