Florida teachers would need to take oath under proposal

The measure (HB 147) would be required for public school teachers, similar to oaths taken by lawyers, doctors, and public officials, according to a news release from Fabricio.

The bill is filed for consideration during the legislative session that will start Jan. 13.

The bill would require teachers to take an oath that says:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States and the Constitution and Government of the State of Florida;

“that I am duly qualified for employment as a classroom teacher in this state;

“that I will well and faithfully perform the duties of a classroom teacher in a professional, independent, objective, and nonpartisan manner;

“that I will uphold the highest standards of academic integrity and professional ethics;

“that I will foster a respectful learning environment for all students, which promotes critical thinking, civic responsibility, and lifelong learning;

“and that I will serve as a positive role model in both conduct and character, so help me God.”

Federal agents barrel into band at Portland ICE protest, arrest clarinetist, accuse her of assault | The Seattle Times

A clarinet player for a Portland marching troupe that frequently performs during protests was arrested when federal agents barreled into the band while pursuing another suspect, bystander video shows.

Members of the Unpresidented Brass Band were playing the theme from “Ghostbusters” on a patch of gravel across the street from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in South Portland when clarinetist Oriana Korol was arrested Sunday.

Korol, a 38-year-old child and family therapist, was detained at ICE and then taken to the Clark County Jail. Demonstrators detained by federal officers are sometimes quickly released but other times have been lodged in outside facilities such as the Columbia and Yamhill county jails, pending formal charges.

On Tuesday afternoon, supporters waited outside federal magistrate court, where Korol did not appear. As of 2 p.m., the federal government had not filed charges against her as she sat in jail, where a Clark County Sheriff’s Office representative said she was being held on suspicion of assault on a federal officer.

#LA County declares state of #emergency to aid residents hit by #immigration #raids

..." Los Angeles County officials voted Tuesday to declare a state of emergency that gives them power to provide assistance for residents they say have suffered financially from ongoing federal immigration raids.

The move allows the LA County Board of Supervisors to provide rent relief for tenants who have fallen behind as a result of the crackdown on immigrants. A local state of emergency can also funnel state money for legal aid and other services."...

Filling the Gaps: Mexican oral historian recovers lost stories of Northeast Florida’s Hispanic community

that moment was shattered when another classmate reported her to their teacher, and Karimi was called into the principal’s office.

“I didn’t know why,” Karimi recalled. “He said, ‘I heard you’re speaking Spanish on a school ground, that’s not permitted.”

As a child, Spanish was her first language.

“We were just playing children, playing in the schoolyard,” she recalled. “I was chastised for that.”

She said the principal warned her to keep the Spanish-speaking at home.

Many decades later, the flame ignited on that day still burns vigorously as she works to uncover and tell the lost stories of the Hispanic population in Northeast Florida.

Law aimed at punishing Trump protesters being used against UF fans who ran onto football field - Creative Loafing Tampa

Four exuberant football fans who rushed the field after the University of Florida’s upset win over Texas are facing first-of-their-kind, felony trespass charges under a new law a Republican senator said was intended to punish protesters of President Donald Trump during his appearances in the state.

Lawmakers in Tallahassee said they never intended the new law to be used against fans storming football fields after a huge victory. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it in May.

And famed former UF head coach Steve Spurrier said in a new interview he thinks such fan actions at college games energize players and make a lifetime memory for students.

Two UF students and two older men were handcuffed and arrested Oct. 4 after police said they ran onto Steve Spurrier-Florida Field after the team’s 29-21 victory over the then-No. 9 Longhorns. It was a rare moment of exhilaration so far this season for UF, whose record fell to 2-4 after Saturday’s loss to No. 5 Texas A&M.

A review of statewide criminal records across Florida shows that the felony charges recommended by law enforcement in their cases would be the first filed under the new law, which took effect May 16. It bans anyone from entering an area secured by law enforcement or a large, ticketed sports or entertainment event without a ticket – with penalties up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Such cases were previously handled as misdemeanors. The new law, which two Democratic state lawmakers voted against, puts running past police onto a football field after a big game on the same criminal level as aggravated assault, bribery, drug possession or child abuse.

It's really sad how cars ruin the outdoors wherever they go. :(

Nothing makes you hate cars more than living on a busy street, forced to listen to their din day in and day out. >:(

Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud — Not Just Bikes

Urban noise is a common problem, and the vast majority of it is created by motor vehicles. Noise is far too often dismissed as a minor nuisance, rather than the legitimate health issue that it is.

The book "Curbing Traffic" has a chapter about the health impacts of noise pollution. I explore the research in the book, and visit Delft, the city that is highlighted in the book as being a shining example of what can happen when noise pollution is taken seriously.

This video explores the problem that farting cars, farting motorcycles, and farting mopeds create in our cities.

J.D. Vance Tried to Evade Journalists' Questions. It Did Not Go Well

STEPHANOPOULOS: Trump said Pritzker should be in jail. Do you think he has committed a crime?
VANCE: I think Pritzker has certainly failed to keep the people of Illinois safe
S: It's a yes or no question
V: I certainly think he has violated his fundamental oath. That seems pretty criminal to me
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-10-12T15:25:38.052Z

“George, you’re going to keep on asking this question. I’m going to keep on telling you that Governor Pritzker failed to do his job,” Vance said. “He should suffer some consequences. Whether he’s violated a crime, ultimately, I would leave to the courts. But I certainly think that he has violated his fundamental oath of office. That seems pretty criminal to me. I’d leave it to a judge and jury to decide whether he’s actually violated the crime.”
