Florida teachers would need to take oath under proposal

The measure (HB 147) would be required for public school teachers, similar to oaths taken by lawyers, doctors, and public officials, according to a news release from Fabricio.

The bill is filed for consideration during the legislative session that will start Jan. 13.

The bill would require teachers to take an oath that says:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States and the Constitution and Government of the State of Florida;

“that I am duly qualified for employment as a classroom teacher in this state;

“that I will well and faithfully perform the duties of a classroom teacher in a professional, independent, objective, and nonpartisan manner;

“that I will uphold the highest standards of academic integrity and professional ethics;

“that I will foster a respectful learning environment for all students, which promotes critical thinking, civic responsibility, and lifelong learning;

“and that I will serve as a positive role model in both conduct and character, so help me God.”

Here's what I had to swear to when I was admitted to the California Bar. (I can't remember the oath when I was sworn into practice before the Federal courts.)
I, (licensee name) solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of an attorney and counselor at law to the best of my knowledge and ability. As an officer of the court, I will strive to conduct myself at all times with dignity, courtesy and integrity.

Like Colbert said last night, ~ Someday all this horror will be rediscovered in history books... "except for Florida".

I mean, this oath is anti-GOP in its wording, but I bet it's being promoted by the GOP just to put God in schools in one more way.

I'm a bit baffled that they put "critical thinking" in there

Exactly, that's why I said it's anti-GOP in the wording.

Of course, they will trot out Insane Clown Prager U screed as the meaning of "Critical Thinking".
