Israeli Settlers Want to Permanently Occupy Gaza

Even as the war in Gaza is still on-going, there are calls from inside Israel's right-wing government for a permanent occupation of the Palestinian territory and to allow Jewish settlements there. While the Prime Minister says this is not the government's policy, some say the military's latest moves make it possible. Our correspondent tells us more from the Israel-Gaza border.

Alternate timeline where #Commodore home computers became the standard instead of PCs. 🤔
in reply to Neil E. Hodges

Hard to envision an alternate timeline where this happens, but there was a window of opportunity... the VisiCalc revolution made the Apple ][ a big success, but Apple was still a small time manufacturer that wouldn't be able to scale up production and reduce costs the way Commodore could.

But the PET lacked the graphics capabilities of the Apple ][, which is why VisiCalc was designed for the Apple. What if the PET had better graphics capabilities, to make it the better choice of VisiCalc platform?

The original PET was limited to 512 ROM characters. An alternative design could have combined 128 ROM characters with 128 RAM defined characters, allowing high resolution graphics.

If VisiCalc came out on the PET first, then it's possible Commodore could have built up a big enough lead before the IBM PC to establish it as the main business computer standard. Ideally, the VIC-20 is replaced with a PET compatible "color PET".

Upper level troughing continues to dominate conditions in British Columbia with periodic showers in the mountains and along the coast. This is also keeping temperatures cool with highs Wednesday forecast to be around 10°C (50°F) in the Lower Mainland and 5°C (41°F) in Prince George.

This weather pattern is forecast to continue through Thursday. Friday we start to come under the influence of our next regional storm system. It will bring periods of heavy rain and mountain snow throughout the province over the weekend.

Ingalls Weather thanks the support it gets from donors. Please consider making a small donation at this link to help me pay for the website and access to premium weather data.

Gusty winds are likely along the coast, in the Lower Mainland, and on mountains throughout the province. While Southwestern British Columbia will technically experience an atmospheric river event, it will be category 1 or 2 rather than the extreme category 4 seen last weekend.

A category 2 atmospheric river is described as bringing moderate strength with primarily beneficial rainfall. An average of 35 atmospheric river events make landfall in British Columbia or Southeast Alaska annually. Most are weak or moderate strength.

Snow levels south of Highway 16 will briefly climb to the 2000 to 2300 m range (6500 to 7500 ft) in the warm sector ahead of the front. After the frontal passage they will be closer to 1200 m (4000 feet) with modest regional variation.

Friday

Some showers are possible in the mountains, along the North Coast, and on the islands on Friday. That said, impacts on Friday will be fairly minimal as this is the day when offshore systems will be developing into the storm system driving B.C.’s weather this weekend.

Low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to rapidly intensify on Friday. The low’s center will remain well offshore during this period. Meanwhile, a second low pressure system will move northward from off the coast of California.

This second low will get captured by the larger system’s cold front and be swept northeastward. The main low will likely bottom out somewhere around 960 mb. That pressure value is similar to some hurricanes but winds will be weaker because of how geographically large the storm is.

On Friday evening, wind gusts in excess of 50 km/h (30 mph) will extend outward over 1500 km (950 mi) from the storm’s center, reaching from the Oregon Coast to the Alaska Peninsula. Wind gusts above 80 km/h (50 mph) will extend out to about 950 km (600 mi).

Snow associated with the frontal boundary will begin moving inland north of Bella Coola around sunset.

Saturday

A map of Southwest British Columbia and Northwest Washington showing wind gusts. Vistoria has 84 km/h, Point Roberts 77 km/h, Vancouver 53 km/h, and Abbotsford 45 km/h.ECMWF modeled wind gusts in km/h for 05:00 Saturday. (Windy)
Heavy rain from the cold front will move into urban areas of the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island during the early morning hours. The secondary low embedded within the front is likely to make landfall on the Olympic Peninsula before sunrise and move toward the North Cascades.

Having a low here will amplify wind speeds for southern Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and the Strait of Georgia. Wind gusts around 70-90 km/h (45-55 mph) are possible along the water in these locations.

The ground around the southwestern quarter of the province is quite saturated after last weekend’s atmospheric river. Scattered power outages are possible and there is a higher risk of trees being toppled than usual. The strongest winds for Victoria and the Lower Mainland will be before 09:00.

Rain and mountain snow should be being seen throughout British Columbia by noon. Snow will be particularly heavy in the Coast Ranges north of the Sunshine Coast as well as the Interior north of Highway 16.

Rainfall totals on Saturday range from around 40 mm (1.6 inches) on the Central Coast to 25 mm (1 inch) around the Lower Mainland and Prince Rupert to 5 mm (0.1 inches) in Prince George.

Values lower than this can be expected in the lower elevations of the Cariboo and arid parts of the Okanagan. The Okanagan will get most of their rain on Sunday.

More than 50 cm (20 inches) of snow is forecast for the Coast Range generally around Bella Coola with lower values both to the north and to the south. Remote areas northwest of Prince George could see between 10 and 15 cm (4-6 inches) of new snow.

Sunday & Monday

A showing 700 mb temps around -9C over much of British Columbia and nearby waters. Compare to temps above 5C on the US Great Plains and above 3C well offshore outside the influence of this system.ECMWF modeled 700 mb temps and wind showing the cold airmass over the Pacific Northwest. Cold temperatures aloft help lift moisture from the surface to create showers and t-storms. (Windy)
The low remains the dominant feature of British Columbia’s weather into Sunday. Upper level temperatures will drop behind the cold front creating an environment for scattered strong showers.

Isolated thunder is possible and heavier showers could temporarily lower the snow level locally. Small hail and/or graupel will accompany these cells in the mountains and Interior B.C.

Postfrontal showers actually begin on the coast, islands, and Lower Mainland on Saturday afternoon. The Okanagan will have the cold front and associated rain pass through during the morning hours. They can expect a few mm of precipitation out of this.

Shower activity is forecast to continue into Monday but rain and snow will be less widespread.

Extended forecast

This weekend’s storm appears to be the first in a parade of strong Gulf of Alaska systems. Models show the next regional storm entering the Gulf of Alaska on Tuesday with impacts beginning in the northwestern quarter of British Columbia that evening. Rain and snow become more widespread overnight into Wednesday.

We are too far out to see clear details on that event. It does look similar to the first storm in some respects, though there isn’t a strong signal for big wind in Vancouver or Victoria. Another large system appears possible the following weekend.

October and November are the wettest months of the year in British Columbia (the exact month depends on one’s location). Fall starts with the average storm track aimed at Southeast Alaska. From here it slides southward to reach the Oregon in late-November.

Do not seize the day. This will startle the day and may cause it to become aggressive and give you a nasty bite.

Instead approach the day calmly without making eye contact, pet it gently, and slowly enfold it in a careful embrace.

If the day shows any signs of resistance to being engaged with, it is likely to turn on you. Back off and return to bed.

We're thinking about getting a small emergency generator, budget under $500. I know nothing and have only done enough research to know there are generators under $500.

What should I look for? What are the most important features? What should I read up on?

in reply to Skean Harshly

@dandrumheller Awesome! We're having some other electoral work done soon anyway, so I'll ask for a quote. Just having the thing in my hands with an appliance extension cord to the freezer will give me the peace of mind that we'll be able to eat during short term emergencies.
in reply to Mx. Luna Corbden

it's amazing peace of mind.

The week my daughter was born we had a big ice storm - spent 3 days in a cooling house, then 1 in a hotel, then 3 in the hospital. Power came back the morning we got home. Got the generator the following spring.

Have had a few 2-3 day outages since then, and typically 1-2 single days per winter.

It's awesome to be at least somewhat self sufficient for light, heat, food and communication.

Yes absolutely. Or using installed when they just bookmarked a website. I had a case where someone wrote they have trouble after installing Krita and it turned out, after they send some screenshots they didn't actually install anything just bookmarked the website and made a shortcut to that bookmark on their taskbar (apparently while trying to fix things).

It got really hard to help some people because of this cargo cult tech language, where they just use some random technical terms like it's a prayer or magic word and you just end up being completely confused about what they actually want to tell you. Super weird. I noticed this more often in the past two or three years.

I do wish that US code-based door locks would follow the Korean example and do away with keys. The keyway being the weakest part of the design of the lock.

In case the internal battery goes flat the Korean door locks have two exterior terminals which take a 9V battery, which is an elegant solution.

reshared this

in reply to Glen Turner

An even more elegant solution would be a qi charger pad built into the lock, so you could give it a boost that way. I don't tend to carry a 6LR61 around in my pocket after all.

I'm not sure removing the keyway makes them any more secure though - there are a good number of simple exploits for keypad locks now, with some defeated with something as simple as a strong magnet. I'm sure you've seen LPL and Deviant Ollam (amongst others) do similar :)
