I'd ask how they even got on the Burke-Gilman trail, but I recall a few spots where it was possible back in my days when I used to ride it on my bicycle.

I admit, if I saw a car on it, I'd be furious. That was my safe space.

in reply to Laura "Tegan" Gjovaag ⛈

@realtegan yeah, there are road crossings even in that part of the trail. Basically anything that connects to Riviera has to cross Burke-Gilman, so.

Most of us rely on our cell phones in case of emergencies, expecting that if something happens, we can call for help or guidance, we can connect with loved ones, we can offer our services as volunteers in the community. But it is not uncommon for cell phones to lose service during emergencies, or to become so overwhelmed with usage that many people have trouble getting through.

Mutual Morris has held some sessions already for people to learn to communicate by ham (amateur) radio, and a couple of our members were able to take the test and get licensed. We want to do a lot more and be part of a group of people prepared to respond to any emergencies that come along. You don't have to live in Morris County! We can study, learn, and practice with you and work together in local, regional, and global networks of mutual aid response, support, and solidarity.

If you think this is something you would be interested in joining, email us at info@mutualmorris.com. We don't have any meetings planned at this time but if there is interest, we can get started any time.

in reply to Josh Jersild

@eniko the unfortunate thing is that most of the bugs that I've been stumbling into are so far off into weird corners of C++ that they're probably never going to bubble up to "oh we should actually fix this" status

A couple have, though (literally two), but that leaves 5 that aren't fixed (plus one that I hit that caused the compiler to blow out my system memory and crash my computer, which I did not feel like trying to narrow down to make a small repro case so that one's still open for sure)

in reply to Josh Jersild

@eniko hehe. Reminds me of the MSVC 1.5 bug where any new (even with array allocs) was truncated to the lower 16 bits of your request size. They kept updating things for stuff like MFC compatibility, but never that one. Might not force you on to their NT compiler if they fixed it now, doncha know?
in reply to Jon A. Cruz

@joncruz @eniko my biggest current grump is how far behind MSVC has fallen in implementing C++23 stuff, which I want, but have been plowing ahead (like every other big corp) cramming AI all up into it
in reply to Eniko | Kitsune Tails out now!

@eniko @joncruz I'm a little curious what you use these constructs for-- do you use computed gotos for an interpreter that uses threaded code?
I also bet there's a way to transpile C code using these constructs to equivalent code that does not, though it might require committing some language crimes.
in reply to scunneen (he/him) 🚋

@scunneen @joncruz statement expressions are for all sorts of stuff like better macros and easier transpiling, and computed gotos can be used for interpreters but also very clean coroutines. The alternative for those would be duff's device and having done both duff's device is not a very viable alternative

A question for (mostly) the game developers. Are there any games/game engines out there that accurately simulate monochromatic light? Is yellow light actually yellow, and not treated as a mix of red and green?

For example, if you are rendering a yellow sodium lamp, and the light falls on a green object, is the reflected light that you see green or yellow? True monochromatic light can only ever be reflected back as the same colour, so with only yellow light present, everything must appear yellow. Mixed light behaves as an addition of the reflections of each individual colour, so if the light were a mix of red and green, then a green object would reflect the green but no red, so you would see green.

#GameDev #Graphics #Rendering

Neil E. Hodges reshared this.

in reply to Rua

things that handle color iirc almost always use 3D-color (r, g, b as a vector), to accurately simulate monochromatic light, you would need a few more components to your colors.
Other than that, this should be relatively straight-forward (once we find out how to create RGBabcdefghijklA PNGs)
This entry was edited (4 days ago)
in reply to Rua

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot renders not just RGB but also has a channel for infrared light, which is used for the night vision goggles. I'm not sure how it was done technically and if there is a GDC talk or something similar about it, but it was advertised quite heavily back then.

If someone is constantly on their phone while doing something, it's a sure sign that they don't want to be doing that something. Some common examples:

  • Watching the kids
  • Walking the dog
  • Stuck with a bad date

What oil companies say: "We can use carbon capture and storage technology to help save the climate! All we need is billions of dollars more in government subsidies every year."

But in fact the whole thing is a scam, because "almost 80% of all the CO₂ captured by existing CCS installations has been reinjected into oil fields – to pump more oil." 🤦‍♂️
