WATCH: Seriously, if you’re following ANY bike-lane debate, you HAVE TO WATCH this news story. You actually can’t make this up. Ford claims without evidence that bike-lanes are bad for small business, and THE ACTUAL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION obliterates him with data.

this year my Halloween costume is a bike lane 'killing' small businesses

I absolutely love the guy who rides past at the end and shouts "bike lanes save lives" at the camera crew mid interview.

When a billionaire owner’s effort to avoid negative attention about fascist appeasement by directing his editorial board to not endorse a candidate inadvertently draws far more attention than simply letting the newspaper follow its normal process would have, this is known as the Reichstand Effect.

There's precedents for this.

Six newspaper moguls actively promoted Nazi ideology in the prelude to WW2.

The #WashingtonPost and #LATimes will go down in infamy for their cowardly decisions to forgo a presidential endorsement this year. Let’s be clear. This is appeasement of authoritarianism. It is obeying in advance. It is cowardice.

Samsung phone users under attack, Google warns: A nasty bug in Samsung's mobile chips is being exploited by miscreants as part of an exploit chain to escalate privileges and then remotely execute arbitrary code, according to Google security researchers. The good news it is fixed in monthly security update. So apply those ASAP.

Mastodon is financed by crowdfunding instead of venture capital not because we don't know that venture capital exists, not because we don't have bills to pay, and not because venture capital isn't willing to give money to new social media platforms. VCs don't want a sustainable business, they want a big exit. Every VC-backed business is on a timer to deliver or die.
in reply to Wysteria Shannon Prickett reshared this.

@wysteriary Nah. The VC funding is exactly why I use #XMPP instead of #Matrix and #Mastodon instead of #Bluesky. We don't need VC funded startups to reinvent basic internet standards and trying to displace standards with their custom and incompatible protocols.
in reply to uexo

@uexo @wysteriary yah, every other VC-funded open source project uses this exact same argument "we're different, we haven't let it affect us" right up until the moment the investors start putting pressure on for returns. Matrix is no different, in fact they started re-inventing the wheel specifically so that they could get big VC dollars, so there's no chance they wouldn't make huge compromises if those dollars were under threat.

Carbon emissions are now growing faster than before the pandemic

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2453198-carbon-emissions-are-now-growing-faster-than-before-the-pandemic/

>Instead of a “green recovery”, global greenhouse gas emissions are rising much faster now than they did in the decade preceding the global pandemic. Emissions rose 1.3 per cent to 57.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023. That is a far faster annual rate of growth than during the decade 2010-2019, when emissions grew on average 0.8 per cent per year

>All sources of greenhouse gas emissions except land use are rising,

Not surprising I guess, just open the flight radar web page, or glance out the window at the endless cars , hear endless dogs barking (large meat eating pets). We haven't changed how we act, which would typically lead to changing how we vote.

Nearly everywhere there has been minor gains by Greens they are in retreat rather the massive surge needed to change policy. We concentrate on stupid shit like ecars rather then the changes needed.

https://simpleflying.com/delta-air-lines-boeing-737-900er-engine-issues-sacramento/

the “engine issue” was a percussive failure that generated a very loud, explosive “bang” followed by airframe vibration that lasted almost until the aircraft was back on the ground

in reply to ɹǝʌɐǝʍ Neil E. Hodges reshared this.

The high-banked turn immediately after the explosion-like sound, completed while the entire plane was rattling and shaking, was intense.

I calmed down quite a bit once we were aimed back at the airfield, since we relatively high already and another engine failure would leave time for a landing

When you like to do things "the hard way" because you like to learn how things work, but industries are bent on preventing people from learning how things work because it makes users dependent on profitable technical support. :(

If someone is constantly on their phone while doing something, it's a sure sign that they don't want to be doing that something. Some common examples:

  • Driving
  • Watching the kids
  • Walking the dog
  • Stuck with a bad date

@realtegan yeah, there are road crossings even in that part of the trail. Basically anything that connects to Riviera has to cross Burke-Gilman, so.
