Why are houses being built today so ugly? Do today's home buyers really have such poor taste?

I'm guessing you might be referring to those (stacked) "false gable" roof lines. Some people think they improve the "curb appeal". Personally I really don't like any architectural features disguised as functional, but which are function-free illusory window dressing. They're not just function-free I guess as they're trying to pretend there is something more to what you're seeing than there really is. Their function is in deceit. They don't even have the historic appeal of false-front facades on commercial buildings from the pioneer days.
