Flickr’s CEO, Don MacAskill, is asking for your feedback if Flickr should connect to #ActivityPub. Simply post your opinion in Don’s Twitter thread here:https://twitter.com/DonMacAskill/status/1594945727255699457?t=Kk4ikjDrqQiIVV6a2-mDbA&s=19

#Flickr is a photo-sharing platform and social network created in Canada in 2004 by Stewart Butterfield, Caterina Fake and Jason Classon and was bought by Yahoo! In 2005. Later it was sold again to to SmugMug Inc. Users upload photos for others to see. Users create a free account and upload their own photos (and videos) to share.

A rising tide lifts all boats & a larger audience on the Fediverse has the circular effect of drawing more people.

I'm curious to see if this goes anywhere.

ActivityPub is what allows you to be able to talk to and follow other users across websites, like how I'm talking to you from Misskey rather than Mastodon

I assume you would be able to follow Flickr accounts from any activitypub support website (most likely with an @ like @ <username> @ flickr.com), and have newly posted photos show up in your timeline

Np! I personally think that this is how the internet should be, no central place controlling it all, and everyone can use their own preferred platforms while still being able to talk to each other :blobfoxfloofhappy:

i don't have an oppinion as long as they don't say how the want to connect. Imagine flickr is sending all it's post's to the federated timeline ... that would be a crazy amount of data which smaller instances most likely won't be able to handle. So even connected it would lead fast to deferated flicker cause running costs or complexity ... and instances who defederate flickr might loose users cause yeah they can't connect everywhere they want...

(at least that's what i got from reading about the growing pain's in the last few weeks)

Flickr couldn't simple send every post to a small servers federated timeline. A user on an instance needs to follow a user for their posts (and posts they have boosted) to make it to an instance's federated timeline, with some other exceptions. A small instance where no user follows any Flickr accounts would only see Flickr posts boosted by their follows.

but how likely is it that a you only have people on the server which don't follow someone from flickr ? Specially since flickr is even much bigger than mastodon.
