A lazyweb question: what do you need to ride a motorbike in the states? In the UK IIRC, you need a driving license, then do compulsory training for up to 125cc which only lasts for 2 years before you have to repeat or do a full bike test to allow any engine size.

In my state:

  • You are allowed to ride a motorcycle with only a driver's license if it's 49cc or under and has a speedometer that maxes at 30 MPH.
  • You must take both written and riding permit tests to get a motorcycle permit. These expire in 180 days (can be renewed once without retesting) and are only restricted in that you can't ride at night and can't ride during the day.
  • You must take both written and riding permit tests while holding a motorcycle permit to get a motorcycle endorsement (license). These never expire.

Is shifting standardized across brands?
I haven't ridden in ages....
though still have the endorsement on my license...

Yep, no major manufacturer is doing their own things with respect to transmission controls anymore.
