How to get empty buses:
- schedule 4/5 buses a day at random times
- change the timetable and route without warning
- don’t have covered and accessible bus stops
- 90% of potential users drive their car because it’s just too complicated
- buses are empty! they’re costing money, let’s go down to 2/3 buses a day to be efficient
- repeat until there are no buses and your car-centric society is solidly established
- “people in the countryside just prefer cars unlike all these wokes in big cities”

Or even better:

  • Only have #SchoolBuses that ain't allowed to carry anyone but #Schoolkids and don't offer any #Buses at all because 'Everyone has #Cars so why would anyone want a #Bus?'
  • Only have Buses scheduled at useless times for any #WageWorker needing to #commute so they can't be at work on time if they use the #Bus.
  • Just don't run Buses when the road isn't cleared and have #SnowRemoval not reach the small villages before 10:00 local.

And then you get villages where basically everyone has to own a #4x4 because otherwise they can't get to work on time 1/4-1/2 of the year.

@kkarhan If environmentalists really think public transit can save the world, make it free. People will go to silly effort to get something for nothing. Making bus/train free is using human psychology to your advantage, while most green measures are working against human nature and therefore fail.

@mike805 TBH, I think that #PublicTrnasport should be available free of charge, just like #biking and #walking because the costs of #cars exceeds the costs of doing so.

@kkarhan @mike805 It's a lot easier in small city-states or in cities that have actual populist liberals rather than limousine liberals. Thus why Tucson AZ, with actual populist liberals, has free public transportation while San Francisco CA, with limousine liberals, does not.
in reply to Badtux the Snarky Penguin

@badtux @kkarhan Tell the limousine liberals that they can get around faster if all the peasants take the bus. The best way to arrange that is to make the buses free.
in reply to mike805

@mike805 @badtux but that goes against the their reactionary christofacist belief that poor people must be punished for living while poor...

in reply to Kevin Karhan :verified:

@kkarhan @badtux Well Jesus made it clear that people with means had a duty to help the poor. There is a lot of hypocrisy among people who call themselves Christians. Providing free transit would be a very Christian thing to do.

The origin of the British workhouse is interesting: Parliament required towns to provide for their poor. The town officials were afraid of an influx of bums, so they intentionally made the "charity" as harsh and unpleasant as possible. Sounds familiar.

@mike805 @kkarhan The problem with making buses free in America is that buses are largely used by poor people and people of color in America, both of which are hated subclasses of Americans, so it's mostly a non-starter. Plus there's this weird devotion to the idea that mass transit should pay for itself, even though car infrastructure doesn't pay for itself (sorry, gas taxes pay only a small percent of the total cost of car infrastructure).
in reply to Badtux the Snarky Penguin

@badtux @kkarhan In some cities, bus and train fares just about pay the cost of collecting the fares. The system would be more efficient if people did not have to queue up to get tickets and go through turnstiles, and if bus passengers did not stop at the front to pay, sometimes blocking others from getting on.

Having it completely "just walk on" free would have magical effect on transit use.

You would need civilized homeless shelter arrangements, or they would live on the transit.

This seems about right.

Rural areas don't have effective public transport so most drive.

That means there is no incentive to invest in public transport

@simonzerafa Eeyupp...

And then wounder why in some places drive 4x4's:

  • Roads don't get cleared before 10:00 local - if at all!
  • Bus service refuses to operate before the roads have been cleared.
  • Some #WageWorkers need to be on time at like 0600 if not earlier, so even if they were allowed to take the #SchoolBus they'd be too late!

@mkj add to that (for extra maliciousness):
  • convoluted routes that are longer than necessary.
  • lack of interconnect and hubs to switch lines and directions w/o having to wait literally hours.
  • expensive tickets and complex tariff structures that even locals don't understand.
  • Tickets have to be bought before entering the bus, but there's no (working) ticket vending machine!
  • Bus stops being kilometers away from actual settlements and houses.
  • No bus service on weekends, holidays, in or outside peak hours.
  • inaccessible bus stops.

@kkarhan
Yep. My early shift starts at 06:30h so public transport wouldn't be any use anyway 🫤🤷‍♂️
in reply to Simon Zerafa

@simonzerafa you ain't the first one I heard that of.

I know folks who literally had a #Jeep for that reason alone + having to be on time regardless if the road was cleared or not...
