The passthrough thing I was using to extract the audio channel out of the HDMI cable only works if a monitor is plugged in. This is a problem because I'm not using the HDMI cable for video anymore because doing so was limiting me to 30 Hz. Now I have to get a USB → TOSLINK cable instead. (All PCIe slots are occupied, so that isn't an option.) :(
