"The fediverse isn't profitable"

Actually, the fediverse is a great place for artists and creators to find support for work they are passionate about and pour their soul into. It's just not profitable for multi-million dollar corporations that want to fill the pockets of already far too wealthy execs.

I am here, and I like the fediverse - and I also agree with most of these replies. I do also want to point out something basic: servers and bandwidth and electricity and tech support - are not free. A lot of regular people are/were employed by those evil corporations you are complaining about. Try to remember that they’re all not the billionaire owners, they’re just regular people. Who pays for all the costs of the fediverse as it grows beyond hobby scale?

I’m so tired of “enriches the 1%” as the only metric that seems to matter…

i feel like it just needs a feed based on likes. For now they don't do anything but I'd love to see my following/instance's most liked tweets in the last 24h. That would help small creators be pushed forward. Same with boosts!

the quality of this fact is far too high for it to be posted by this account 😝

Once upon a time I created and maintained what was a very popular website - within a small niche. Friends told me to use it to make money. Stores asked me to write for them - for the exposure (hahaha, fuck off).

Profits? My only profit was fun. The niche was fun, writing was fun, HTML was fun, creating a useful resource was fun.

All I wanted to do was to let people know about stuff I enjoyed doing - their fun was my reward. Worked perfectly. #profitfreegood

The fediverse is MASSIVELY profitable. You just gotta be happy with having a little lemonade stand on the side of the road and hoping people come by. As opposed to the usual business strategy of blowing up all the other lemonade stands so people will come by and drink "Corpa brand Piss Drink" (tm)

@courtcan Hey! I signed up for lies!
Now I find out that you used to preach truths?!
Deeply disappointed. I thought that I knew you.

If you measure wealth in friendship I’ve found the fediverse to be extremely profitable

I wish to lodge a protest as to the well-above-average-quality of this fact, and I would also like to make a request that we continue to shout from the highest rooftops that "there's no money to be made here, move along social marketing whiz kids!"

Dang it, Low Quality, this is not only not a low quality post, but it is the best thing anyone has said about #Mastodon in all the time I’ve been here. Can we expect a return to your usual standards soon?

Though I imagine VPS's are doing pretty good rn. If there is any money to be had for corps in this, then that's probably the way to go, rather than trying to profit off of it directly.
Hopefully more people will switch to self-hosting, assuming it's cheaper in the long run, which I imagine it would be. I'm not an admin though so idk.

the fediverse isn't profitable simply because they can't figure out how to show you random ads :P

but that ironically doesn't mean it's not an amazing place to advertise, you will get far more interaction than on most platforms in my experience.
You just can't force people to perpetuate your posts/"ads", people have to like what you post and boost it, that's the only way to advertise, and there's no way to monetize that as ads, except maybe if you'd pay everyone to boost it :u
