public service announcement from my friend emily:

will play a sound that unlocks shopping cart wheels should you need to do so. They have several models of wheel available. The sound it makes is pretty awful but boy does it interest my dog.

Had an opportunity to try this. Both work, but took a couple attempts. Maybe there's a cool down period the wheel requires between triggering events?

Me, to friend we ran into randomly at the grocery store yesterday: Oh, don't mind him, he just found out something about a sound that unlocks the shopping cart wheels and this is the first store we've been to since he learned this.

It may be very low power since these things are intended for basically zero maintenance. There's a whole foods near where I work that has a basket full of about 20-30 security wheels just sitting by the front door.

Have a wheel, leave a wheel, need a wheel take wheel?

The carts at this particular store have a lock on wheels on opposite corners. When they trigger it becomes nearly impossible to use the cart. It wouldn't be so problematic except I was crossing the entrance to the parking lot when they locked.

oh it's cool that it was actually useful not just hey does this internet thing ACTUALLY work

Yes! One I realized it was locking wheels, I balanced the cart on one wheel to get it out of driveway. Looked at the locking wheels and they look like lots of people have dragged it while locked. Sections are worn through the surface if the wheel. Unlocked and locked the wheels another 3-4 times.

Curious what that signal looks like on a scope.

well I could for sure get that, and even a FFT of it. That's a cool idea. I'll hook up a mic to mine downstairs.
