13-year-old Brazilian boy transferred to Virginia facility after ICE detention - masslive.com

ICE arrested the boy, whose family is from Brazil, after an interaction with the Everett Police Department, the Boston Globe reported.

The boy’s mother received a call on Thursday to pick her son up from the department; however, an hour and a half later, she was told ICE had taken her son, the Globe reported.

“ICE does NOT target juveniles or children,” DHS Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement to MassLive. “At the time of the detainment, ICE had no knowledge of the individual’s age.”

from the linked Globe article:

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

In his ruling, Stearns mentioned the boy’s age, stating he’s detained “in the company of unrelated adult detainees.” At the time, the boy was still believed to be in Massachusetts.

“I’ve never done a bond or a habeas for a kid this young, ever. This is the youngest,” Lattarulo said.

“At the time of the detainment, ICE had no knowledge of the individual’s age.”

So, they simply detain random people?

I love the "ICE does not target juveniles or children" said with a straight face after they were ziptie-ing toddlers in Chicago

After all, lack of facial hair and a high-pitched voice are no indication of age. Also, we had no way of knowing the person wasn't female.

What really gets me is that that they incarcerated this person and they have no idea who he/she is.
