Threads has lost half its users since launch, Zuckerberg tells staff

Meta Platforms executives are heavily focused on boosting retention on their new social media app Threads, after it lost more than half of its users in the weeks following its buzzy launch, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees on Thursday.

Retention of users on the text-based app was better than executives had expected, although it was "not perfect," said Zuckerberg, speaking at an internal company town hall, the audio of which was heard by Reuters.

"Obviously, if you have more than 100 million people sign up, ideally it would be awesome if all of them or even half of them stuck around. We're not there yet."

Zuckerberg said he considered the drop-off "normal" and expected retention to grow as the company adds more features to the app, including a desktop version and search functionality.

Not that I can see.

He is right about one thing though, when you offer a new service like this tons of people sign up and most never come back. "Bright, shiny, new object effect".

Not sure I need another social network and I wouldnt't even consider it until they come out with a web presence. I only use my phone for social media when I'm not at home, becuse having several browser tabs open at once allows me to check in and out easily while working on other things. When Twitter was still OK, I had Tweet Deck open all day in the background.

I had two dormant Instagram accounts and deleted both after threads started

Well and the flip side is if you are going to do something unlawful, don't tell Facebook.

Interesting that Zucks seems to view Threads as something of a placeholder until 2030, so user-numbers wouldnt be too much of a dilemma atm. i wonder what they have in store.

as to telling FB about one's crimes...so many still do! They just can't help themselves..we get one a month or so, appearing in Court for mouthing off on facebook/trying to sell guns through Marketplace and such. As is (apparently not all that) well-known: crims arent known for their cleverness. Cunning, maybe, cleverness no.

not everyone wants to communicate with the Fediverse but do enjoy flipping quick msgs, jokes and images to friends and family, so they use Facey/Meta bc of the perceived "safety and security" (of not being blasted by some stranger from across the seas, for example), ease and familiarity.
With the move to Masto from The Bird many small organisations have found themselves splintered and lost, roaming the Fediverse like ghosts of times past. So that didnt go well, depending on one's point of view. The same would happen if they left FB, so they hang in rather than risk years of establishment.
'tis a curious thing."better the devil you know"

Agree, @clarice oncemore I don't post as often on FB as here sny more, but friends, family, former colleaguesa and organizations I follow are over there. And yes, I can actually block people, and set my default post preference to friends only.

there's also the allure of seeing only cheerful posts, less or no politics, pics of grandkiddies and the yoks from in-jokes. For all its many and serious horrors, FB has all that pretty well sewn-up.
It's a comfort to many - eg a local chap whose only available contact with family is through FB via satellite. Phoneage here is quite shit and a letter stating "i'm having a heart attack and am going to hospital" takes about a week to be delivered, so he contacts the district nurse via facey. She's at the scene in a few minutes (an ambulance takes about 30-40 if available, the air ambulance even longer) and organises the hospital for his arrival. So facey saves lives...0.0 It's a shame it treats its users so horribly.

I use a Chrome extension for Facebook that blocks sponsorted posts, ads, and game invitations, among other things. Fluff-Busting Purity (FBP) lets you customize things like which columns and types of posts you see. That - and an ad blocker really do help. It only works on the desktop version, however.

I play games on FB and some people I know from G+ that did not come over to here. I use Firefox and a VPN ...I never invite people to play my games since I am not there to be social.....
in reply to Adam Hunt

@{Hans} haha! there is sure to be one out there...

@Nora Qudus i can sure dig that. facey games were good! Probably still are :) except Pot Farm, which went away. It was so much fun and didnt require calling in friends in order to unlock too much but one could make new facey accs if that were the case (pre the ID hysteria wherein people willingly gave photo ID, addresses, phonenumbers, mothers maiden names etc. That was wild 0.0 )
i still have a machine devoted to facey, it was such an interesting thing.

same and i'd assumed so :) and it was so pushy about it all! perhaps if a user changes their name to Fuckoff McFuckface it's an indication they dont want to spill their gutz for another's financial gain, as i explained to Barney of Facebook who was very nice,
in reply to Adam Hunt

i also murmured that i bet "Barney of Facebook" isnt their real name either..
