Serious answer, the politics on the ground are insane and Weimar style political infighting runs rife.

Personally, I view it as a microcosm of the consequences stemming from the fallout of groups like OWS and the growing prevalence of racial and sexual minority politics thereafter. Of course, I can't say too much on it myself since I moved away from Portland right before these changes really started taking place (the Portland I remember from my early upbringing in the 2000s was mostly just weird and quirky but ultimately harmless people everywhere)
